STAR's goal is to create a legacy of success in the Bay and South Shore areas. This includes three focus areas: sailor development, coach development and parent support/education. We cannot develop skilled sailors without skilled coaches. The success of the former depends solely on our investment in the later.

And we all know the success of both of those depend on the parents.
Our goal is to raise the level of sailing and coaching along the South Shore with coach development sessions and focused, well-planned practices that will allow sailors to improve their skills each week.

STAR runs annually during the Spring and Fall at SMSC for Opti, c420, Laser and 29er sailors (offered as numbers allow) with training camps at various clubs throughout the summer season. We also provide year-round opportunity for team regatta participation locally, nationally and internationally.

At STAR, coaches will model and instil a culture of hard work, goal-oriented training while having fun in a supportive and inclusive group.  We work together, we grow together and we succeed together. Our culture is critical.
While we may be the ones offering shoulder season training for our collective South Shore sailors, there are a number of local clubs offering junior and adult sail training in the area. Learn more about summer sail training at South Shore clubs here.

Mike Todd

Mike has 18 years coaching at local, national and international competitions at all levels of the sport. He has coached multiple World Cups, World Championships and Youth World Championships; coached 7 medals over two Canada Games (NS and QC); has coached multiple sailors in Top 5 of US Nationals, North Americans, US Youth Champs; and is a Level 5 certified coach (National Coaching Institute). His experience spans classes and includes ILCA boats, 470, 29er, 49er/FX and Opti.

Mike’s philosophy is based in goal-oriented thinking and old-fashioned hard work. What you put in is what you get out. He enjoys working with youth, especially sailors who are focused on the process.  Every single sailor on a team has a role, whatever their end goals, and the journey is never about the end result. It is about the memories, the laughs, the life-long friendships and, most importantly, the life skills that you build along the path. Mike also believes in well rounded athletes. Always participate in other sports. Be fit and active and never stop playing.

If not on the water, you will find Mike skiing, biking (mountain and road), swimming, playing tennis, running and seizing whatever other opportunities he can to learn new sports.
Christine Cragg Santimaw

Christine is a life-long sailor who spent her literal birth day on Mahone Bay with her mum and dad, both accomplished international sailors in their own right. She grew up sailing out of Chester YC, in a variety of boats, finally landing in the Laser II which, to this day, is her absolute favourite of all time. She competed nationally and in the US in the Laser II (usually without much success) but took away from her dinghy days many awesome skills, friendships and memories.

Christine has accompanied her father on True North and Agincourt for numerous ocean races including Newport Bermuda and Marblehead to Halifax, as well as countless race weeks, including, of course, Chester. She currently owns a Bluenose and competes in Chester YC's robust and competitive fleet (again, usually without much success).
When not found at the back of any fleet, you can catch Christine in her role as Director of Sail Training at Chester YC, the largest junior program east of Quebec, on the court as a certified basketball official, trying out whatever new sport opportunity is thrown her way, or behind her computer, working on the STAR program.
