At STAR, we are a team. Everyone works together, everyone celebrates each others successes and supports each others failures. There will be a focus on skill development and learning to train with a goal of creating a strong, thriving group of friends.
We take a 'no jerks allowed' approach to our squad. Sailors, coaches and parents. We call it out. Sailors will be held accountable for their conduct. Anyone exhibiting less than sportsmans-like behaviour will be asked to take a break from the program. We recognize that this might not be for everyone. And that's okay. |

We get a lot of questions about how the team is made. Generally, we look for sailors in Opti, c420, Laser and 29er with a certain combination skills and personality, and six core qualities, things that we feel will make for the best experience and best results:
Sailors who have successfully competed in Open fleets of their respective classes (e.g., Opti AR, two years open experience; Opti IR, those focused on gaining race experience).
Athletes who are ready and excited to take their sailing to the next level and who also have a strong technical base in place to build on.
|
Sailors who want to work hard, "leave it all on the water" and are coachable. They are eager and interested in learning.
Sailors who have experience sailing against other skilled sailors. Technically, their skills and finesse show up on the water.
|
Sailors who have a positive attitude and have demonstrated leadership on and off the water and are supportive of their teammates.
The coaches love them. They're the official, single-handed cheer squad of their team and brings the support - and the laughs - everytime.

If you're a STAR sailor, you believe in our credo. If you're not on board with this, you're not on board with our squad:
- We are sailors. Therefore, we sail as long, hard + as often as we can
- We always sail clean + within the rules
- We are curious, focused + goal-oriented
- We have more fun than anyone else + have a rep as the nicest sailors in the yard
- In training, we train. We do not try to 'win' training; we learn in training so we can win in racing
- We trust the process. We focus on the task + perform that task to the best of our ability, both in training + racing
- We help our fellow STAR sailors + other junior sailors become better. We never put them down or make them feel less than
We do expect all STAR sailors to reflect our credo in their actions and words.
